I used to do these all the time and than had an injury which set me back 2 years. I am finally back at gym and worry that this may not be good for someone like myself since injury I suffer on and off from Periformis and SI Joint dysfunction. Wondering what your opinion is.

I would not recommend this move for you. There are other moves which would isolate the glutes well and would be less aggravating to your injuries.
