The Hood I Wore At Medical School Graduation

There’s something undeniably powerful about donning a hood during a graduation ceremony, especially since it marks the culmination of years of hard work in a graduate or professional program. When you walk up to the center stage, hood draped across your shoulders, it’s like a visual representation of the dedication, sacrifices, and intellectual growth you’ve achieved. The hood symbolizes a kind of academic mastery—it’s a historical garment, evoking the traditions of scholars going back centuries. You can almost feel the weight of those who’ve come before you, standing on the shoulders of giants as you approach the moment when the degree is officially conferred.

As you take each step toward the stage, there’s an immense sense of pride. You’ve earned this. The hood feels like a badge of honor, a marker of your journey through intense learning, late nights, and possibly even moments of doubt. But all of that fades in the glow of the moment when your name is called, and you walk forward to receive your diploma. There’s a certain grace in the ceremony, too—the rhythm of the procession, the silence that fills the air, and the way the hood falls perfectly over your attire, a quiet but unmistakable signal that you’ve reached an academic pinnacle.

The most meaningful aspect of donning the hood for me at my medical school graduation ceremony was that I asked my mom to put it on me when I walked onto the stage to receive my diploma. My mother always believed in me, encouraged me, and was beaming with pride on the day that I graduated from medical school. I couldn’t imagine anyone else placing the esteemed hood across my shoulders.

A very special day in 2001 for me…

Another cool aspect is how the hood is often tied to your field of study through its color. Each color has a specific meaning, representing the different types of graduate studies or professional disciplines. For instance:

  • White often symbolizes a degree in Arts, Humanities, or Letters, evoking clarity, light, and knowledge.
  • Purple is typically associated with Law, representing authority and the prestige of the legal profession.
  • Green might be worn by those earning degrees in Medicine or Public Health, symbolizing healing and growth.
  • Red is often linked to Theology or Divinity, reflecting the historical connection to religious institutions.
  • Dark Blue or Navy signifies Philosophy, capturing the intellectual depth and complexity of the field.
  • Yellow or Gold can represent Science, linking the pursuit of knowledge with the brightness of discovery.
  • Silver Gray is a color worn by those in the field of Social Work or Library Science, representing service and support for the community.

The fact that each color is tied to a discipline makes the hood a visual and symbolic tribute to the unique paths that graduates have taken. It’s like wearing your field’s identity proudly for a moment before the real world asks you to put your knowledge to use. There’s an elegance in the subtlety of these colors, the way they convey a deep history while celebrating your own place within it.

The hood isn’t just an accessory—it’s a symbol of a journey and a transition, from student to professional, and from learner to expert. The way it fits, the way it feels on your shoulders, and the way it marks your success is incredibly meaningful. How did you feel about the moment of walking with your hood at your graduation?

Everyday Health Made Easy: Small Shifts That Build a Better You

Here’s an article with easy tips to get your mind and body in gear! It was written by Camille Johnson of Bereaver.com

Improving your health doesn’t have to mean turning your life upside down. It’s not about chasing extreme diets or waking up at 4 a.m. to train like an Olympian. Real wellness lives in the everyday stuff — how you move, what you eat, the way you breathe when life gets chaotic. When you stack up the right small habits, they start to carry serious weight, and before you know it, you’re showing up for yourself in a way that feels solid, not stressful.

Start the Day on Your Terms

Waking up just fifteen minutes earlier can be a game-changer, especially if you’re usually scrambling to get out the door. That short pocket of quiet lets you center yourself without jumping straight into reactive mode. Maybe it’s sipping coffee while watching the sun rise, maybe it’s journaling, stretching, or just sitting with your thoughts before the day floods in. Whatever you choose, starting slow gives you more control over how the rest of your day unfolds.

Prioritize Hydration

You’d be amazed at how often what feels like fatigue, hunger, or brain fog is actually just dehydration in disguise. Water isn’t flashy, but it’s fundamental. Carry a water bottle you like, refill it often, and drink before you feel thirsty. When you’re hydrated, your joints feel better, your digestion works smoother, and your mood steadies itself without much effort.

Invest in Career Fulfillment with an Online Degree

It’s hard to feel truly well when your work drains more than it gives. Career fulfillment isn’t just a luxury — it’s a major pillar of overall well-being, and sometimes, leveling up means going back to school with purpose. Choosing from an array of accredited online programs makes the process accessible and flexible; for example, online healthcare programs are readily available if you’re interested in healthcare administration. Online programs are built to support working professionals who want to grow without putting their lives on hold.

Protect Your Mental Bandwidth

You only get so much mental energy in a day — guarding it isn’t selfish, it’s survival. Say no when you need to, mute notifications that suck you into pointless scrolling, and don’t feel bad about opting out of drama. Protecting your peace helps you stay focused on what actually matters. You can’t do everything, and pretending you can is just a shortcut to burnout.

Begin a Fitness Routine That Works for You

The hardest part of any fitness journey is usually just getting started, especially if you’ve been out of the game for a while. Forget chasing fads or forcing yourself into workouts you dread — the key is finding something you don’t hate showing up for. You might begin with bodyweight moves at home, join a local walking group, or enroll in an online exercise program led by Stacey Naito, who brings both expertise and encouragement.

Eat With Intention, Not Restriction

Food doesn’t have to be complicated or joyless to be nourishing. You don’t need to give up the things you love, but it helps to check in with how meals make you feel, not just how they taste. Aim for balance — colorful produce, good fats, clean proteins — but leave space for treats without guilt. The goal is to enjoy food that fuels you, not follow a rigid plan that makes you dread your plate.

Create a Sleep Ritual You Actually Look Forward To

Scrolling your phone until your eyes burn isn’t exactly a bedtime strategy, even if it feels like wind-down time. Building a simple sleep ritual trains your brain to transition out of the chaos. Maybe it’s dimming the lights, reading for ten minutes, or running a hot bath before crawling under the covers. Sleep is when your body repairs, and if you treat bedtime like an afterthought, it’s going to show up in your mood, energy, and focus the next day.

Lean Into Joy and Human Connection

You’re not a machine — you need joy, spontaneity, and people who remind you who you are outside of your responsibilities. Grab coffee with a friend, take a weekend road trip, belt your favorite songs while driving. Laughter, touch, shared experiences — those aren’t extras, they’re part of feeling whole. When life starts to feel mechanical, reconnecting with others can shift everything back into color.

Well-being isn’t some far-off summit you have to claw your way up — it’s woven into the tiny, doable decisions you make every single day. When you show up for yourself with habits that support your mind, body, and spirit, you’re not just surviving — you’re building a life you actually enjoy living. Don’t wait for a perfect Monday or some magical motivation to strike. Start now, with what you have, and let those choices carry you to a version of yourself that feels stronger, calmer, and more alive.Elevate your wellness journey with expert nutrition and fitness plans from Stacey Naito—start transforming your lifestyle today!

From Feet Up: The Complete Guide to Total Body Care

Embarking on a journey toward a healthier you doesn’t require monumental changes. It’s about integrating small, practical steps into your everyday routine. This Dr. Stacey Naito guide is your companion on this journey, offering simple yet effective strategies for enhancing your well-being, head-to-toe.

Article written by Karen Weeks (https://elderwellness.net/)

Energize Through Movement

Setting aside time for physical activity is more than just a fitness goal; it’s a gift to your body. Aim for at least 150 minutes of exercise weekly. Whether it’s a brisk morning walk, a cycling session, or an evening dance class, find joy in movements that invigorate your heart, strengthen muscles, and boost your mood. Regular exercise not only improves physical health but also enhances mental well-being, reducing stress and anxiety.

Consider Going Back to School for A Career Change

Work-related stress can have a significant impact on an individual’s mental health and overall well-being. If you find yourself in a job that no longer challenges you or if you feel that you’re ready for a career change, it may be time to consider switching careers to improve your mental health. An online program to get a masters degree in nursing offers a convenient way to achieve your educational goals while still maintaining your current work and family responsibilities. When selecting an online school, it’s crucial to verify its accreditation status and ensure that it offers competitive tuition rates to get the best value for your investment.

Find Time for Walking

For those with sedentary jobs, incorporating more walking into their daily routine can be highly beneficial. Scheduling regular walking breaks throughout the day can break the monotony of sitting and boost both energy and mood. Opting for the stairs rather than the elevator and walking to pick up food instead of using delivery services are simple yet effective ways to increase daily step counts. Additionally, choosing to walk to a coworker’s office for face-to-face interactions not only adds to physical activity but also fosters better workplace relationships.

Tending to Your Foundation: Foot Care

Foot health is an integral part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Our feet carry us through all our daily tasks, emphasizing the importance of selecting comfortable shoes, practicing good hygiene, and treating ourselves to regular foot massages. Such practices are vital not only for foot health but also for overall well-being. Proper foot care aids in preventing frequent problems such as blisters, corns, and fungal infections, which are crucial for sustaining a healthy standard of living.

Culinary Adventures with Herbs and Spices

Revolutionize your approach to healthy living by incorporating herbs and spices into your meals. This strategy is not only about tantalizing your taste buds but also about reducing your sodium intake. Each herb and spice brings not just flavor but also significant health benefits. Herbs such as basil, oregano, and thyme are rich in antioxidants, while spices like turmeric and cinnamon possess anti-inflammatory properties, all contributing to a holistic healthy living diet.

Take Advantage of Martial Arts

Martial arts offers a comprehensive approach to total body care by enhancing physical fitness, mental discipline, and emotional resilience. Regular practice improves cardiovascular health, strength, flexibility, and coordination, contributing to overall well-being. Additionally, the discipline and focus required in martial arts training promote mental clarity and stress relief.

The Whole Grain Advantage

Make a conscious choice to choose whole grains. Rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals, they are fundamental to your health. This switch not only nourishes your body but also supports long-term well-being. Whole grains like brown rice, quinoa, and whole wheat provide sustained energy, improve digestion, and can help maintain a healthy weight.

Incorporating these simple strategies into your daily life steers you towards a healthier lifestyle. Remember, every small step counts. It’s about making choices that benefit your health, ensuring a harmonious balance between mind, body, and soul. Embrace these practices, and watch as they transform your life.

Unlocking the Pinnacle of Physical and Emotional Well-Being

Here’s another informative article by Camille Johnson of bereaver.com to inspire you to get the new year off to a fresh start!

Embarking on the path toward peak self-improvement often starts with cultivating an excellent physical and emotional presence. The role of self-assurance, influenced by both appearance and state of mind, cannot be underestimated. From casual daily interactions to life-defining moments, a boost in confidence can be a game-changer. To assist you during this transformative endeavor, this guide presented below by StaceyNaito.com is designed to present a meticulously curated set of recommendations.

Forge Strong Social Ties

One’s emotional landscape is deeply enriched by the presence of fulfilling social interactions. Humans are wired for connection, and fostering these connections significantly elevates one’s emotional well-being. Studies indicate that people with strong social bonds are generally happier and may even live longer. Therefore, one should consider taking up social hobbies or participating in community events to form and maintain meaningful relationships.

Staying in Shape

Starting a fitness routine can be a transformative journey toward better health and well-being. It begins with setting realistic goals and creating a balanced workout plan that includes a variety of activities to keep you engaged and motivated. Consistency is key, as regular exercise builds endurance, strength, and confidence. Nutrition also plays a crucial role, as a healthy diet complements physical efforts. For more detailed guidance and inspiration, visiting websites like StaceyNaito.com can provide valuable resources and expert advice to help you on your fitness journey.

Elevate Hair Care and Wardrobe Choices

The relationship between well-maintained hair, stylish attire, and self-esteem is undeniable. Investing in high-quality hair care products is essential for maintaining a healthy and vibrant appearance, much like the importance of choosing the right clothing for your wardrobe. The clothes you select play a crucial role in shaping how you feel throughout your day. For instance, choosing comfortable yet fashionable items can greatly enhance your daily experience. Similarly, incorporating a hair care routine that includes products like nourishing oils and effective shampoos transforms basic grooming into a luxurious experience. To boost your daily life, consider adding thoughtful and impactful pieces to your wardrobe that bring a sense of renewed confidence.

Cultivate a Skincare Regimen

Healthy skin is the canvas for your everyday look. Establishing a skincare routine that complements your skin type can yield a radiant complexion, positively impacting your self-esteem. For example, those with oily skin may benefit from a clay mask once a week, while people with dry skin may find relief with a hydrating serum. The important thing is consistency—following a skincare routine religiously can help you achieve the look you’ve always wanted.

Pursue Goals with a New Degree

Setting and achieving goals is a powerful process that can lead to significant personal and professional growth. For instance, if advancing your education has always been a dream, you might consider going back to school. Choosing between online data science master’s programs can be a strategic step, especially if you’re interested in the field of data analytics. By enrolling in an online master’s degree in data analytics, you can deepen your understanding of data science, theory, and application, all from the convenience of your home. This goal not only enhances your skillset but also opens doors to new career opportunities and advancements.

Prioritize Sun Protection

It’s astonishing how often sun protection is overlooked, considering the irreversible damage that UV rays can inflict. Daily application of sunscreen should be as routine as brushing one’s teeth. Not only does this habit prevent premature aging, but it’s also a crucial step in warding off skin cancers. Moreover, consistent sun protection enhances your overall skin quality.

Opt for Nutritional Wisdom

Intricately tied to your physical appearance and general well-being is your diet. Avoiding processed foods and added sugars can have a remarkable effect on both your skin’s glow and your overall health. For instance, replacing soda with sparkling water or choosing whole grains over white bread can be game-changers. This shift toward mindful eating benefits not just your appearance, but also enhances your energy levels and mental clarity.

Uphold Dental Care Standards

A radiant smile compliments any look. It’s the centerpiece of your facial features and often the first thing people notice. Regular dental check-ups, along with at-home practices like brushing and flossing, play a key role in maintaining that confident smile. This ties back to the first point on emotional well-being; after all, a radiant smile is often an indicator of happiness and strong social connections.

The quest to attain the pinnacle of physical and emotional wellness is a multifaceted endeavor. It requires a balanced approach that incorporates various elements of lifestyle, grooming, and social interaction. The pursuit of the optimal self isn’t a sprint but rather a marathon, demanding consistent dedication and awareness. As you integrate these guidelines into your daily life, you’ll find yourself at the very summit of your beauty and wellness journey.

Goals to Give You the Confidence to Return to the World

Check out this inspiring and motivating article written by Camille Johnson on how to get back in gear after being on lockdown for so long.

Do you lack the confidence to re-enter the world after being indoors for an extended period of time? Maybe you lost your job due to the pandemic and are just now going back to work. Or maybe you were affected by lockdowns and are just now finding it safe to socialize again. Whatever the reason, it’s important to make sure you are confident enough to get back into the swing of things. Employ the tips below to help you build the confidence you need to overcome your fears.

Build your confidence and fitness with customized nutrition and fitness programs from Stacey Naito!

The Importance of Setting Goals

Setting goals is one of the most important parts of any lifestyle change. With just a few small changes, it’s possible to dramatically improve your life.

Many people have trouble setting and achieving their goals. This is because they don’t have a clear idea of what they want or need in their lives.

To avoid this, create a list of goals to give yourself the confidence you need to take on the world again. You could create lists with short-term, mid-term, and long-term goals that will help you reach your ultimate goal: happiness!

Reduce Debt, Reduce Stress

Debt is a major source of stress for many people, with 47% of Americans feeling overwhelmed by their debt. While there are a number of factors contributing to the level of debt Americans hold, one major factor is student loans.

Some people might believe that they are not able to take on more debt as they try to pay off existing balances. However, there are ways you can reduce your debt while still saving money, such as refinancing your home.

Refinancing allows qualified homeowners to decrease the equity in their homes and free up cash or reduce their monthly mortgage payments. Additionally, refinancing can be beneficial if you’re looking to take out a different type of loan. For instance, some people refinance a low-interest mortgage for one with an even lower rate.

Go Back to School

Oftentimes, people stop going to school when they get married and have children or they simply start to feel overwhelmed with life. But if you’re interested in progressing in your career, then why not consider going back to school?

Back in the day, it was common for people to care for their kids as a stay-at-home mom. In today’s society, women and men work outside the home. That said, being a working parent can be extremely difficult, and sometimes it might seem like there isn’t an alternative.

Fortunately, there is hope! Going back for an online degree in business, criminal justice, or nursing allows you to complete your education in a more flexible way. It also offers a lot of perks, such as:

  • The ability to balance work, family, and school
  • Not having to commute every day
  • Learning at your own pace
  • No dorm fees

If you’re considering going back to school for a degree or certificate program, now is the perfect time. It’s an investment that can pay off for years to come in higher wages and better job prospects.

In Closing

Setting goals, both short and long term, is not only a great way to stay on track, but it gives you the confidence to return to the world. When you are clear about what you are trying to accomplish, it’s easier to plan a course of action.

Don’t Bully Your Coach – REPOST

personal-training-clientBefore I dive into this topic, I want to make sure that everyone understands that this is meant to be general, and is not directed at anyone in particular. But because I have had numerous conversations with other coaches and trainers recently who have described behavior in their clients which I find unacceptable, I thought this was a good topic to cover in my blog.

First of all, when you hire a coach or trainer, you are hiring that person for his or her knowledge, education and experience. When you challenge fee schedules that are in place, and expect the coach to give you bargain basement pricing just because you are short on funds, or because you don’t see why you should pay that much for someone else’s time, it is insulting to the coach. In addition, coaches and trainers are trying to run businesses and have expenses which need to be covered. I recently saw a quote on Instagram which I loved: “If you think a professional is expensive, wait until you hire an amateur.” Please keep this in mind when you are selecting a coach, and have respect for what he or she offers.

If a coach is designing a customized plan for you, do not expect the plan to be ready within minutes. It takes time to create a customized plan for a client, so please be patient. Once you get your plan, please do not ask incessant questions, especially if they are presented in the middle of the night. Since I am a physician, I understand what it means to be on call all the time, but I will not put up with a 2 am text asking me whether it’s okay to substitute swing lunges with seated leg curls!

Another sure way to aggravate your coach is to be non-compliant, whiny, and intent on changing every aspect of a well designed plan. Why even hire a professional to help you if you are dead set on being a person who uses the word CAN’T all the time? If you trust, admire and respect your coach, then let your coach work his or her magic and help you to reach your goals. Otherwise, you are wasting both your time and energy and those of your coach. Allow your coach to guide you and be your motivator, and speak up if you are faltering in your efforts or if your self-confidence is flagging. Let your coach be truly that: a coach.

My Nutrition Coach Certification

NAFC-Logo-05
Despite the fact that I am a fully licensed and board-certified physician, and also hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science, I realize that some people get hung up on specific certifications. However, I also obtained a Nutrition Coach certification from NAFC to fortify the credentials I already had.

For those of you who are curious about the course, here are some details:

NAFC’s Nutrition Coach Foundations delivers scientifically-based nutrition education so health and fitness professionals can better serve their clients.

Develop the skills, knowledge and abilities to successfully work with clients seeking goal-based nutritional guidance.

In Section I of this course, you’ll get a strong introduction to the basic sciences; in Section II you’ll become immersed in the field of nutritional science; in Section III you’ll learn about the art & science of being an effective coach; and finally in Section IV you’ll go through a step-by-step set of instructions on how to implement nutritional coaching competently & profitably (including over 30 pages of questionnaires and assessment tools to use with your clients).

No other nutrition certification puts all of these components together. No other nutrition certification was written by a physician with over 35 years of experience in the areas of nutrition, fitness, personal training, anti-aging medicine, and performance enhancement.

The National Association for Fitness Certification was established in 1992 to provide scientifically-based, standards-focused education and training for Group Fitness Instructors, Personal Trainers, and Wellness Consultants. The NAFC’s combination of demanding standards, practical application of scientific principles, and affordable program pricing have defined it as the most rapidly-expanding certifying organization in the industry today.

The NAFC was established by a forward-thinking group of fitness professionals, representing expertise in fields including Exercise Physiology, Adaptive Physical Education, Medicine and Nursing, and Professional Coaching. Their desire was to enhance current fitness certification standards by providing access to convenient and comprehensive – yet practical and affordable – education and skills.

The NAFC follows guidelines established by the American College of Sports Medicine, emphasizing practical information with respect to a comprehensive knowledge base.

Education Is VERY Expensive!

My mother struggled to send me to excellent schools because she wanted me to have the best education possible. I know that she borrowed money from her family to send me through my senior year of high school, which back in those days was pretty expensive at around $4,200. Had she opted to pull me from the school I had been at from fourth grade on and put me in public school during my senior year, I probably would have been really screwed up from the shift, so I am very grateful to her for what she did.

It has been 31 years since I graduated from high school. I figured the cost of an education at my alma mater had risen, but when I checked out the school website to see what tuition was these days, I got the shock of my life. Here is the current tuition schedule, not including books and other fees, for the 2014-2015 school year:

TUITION 2014-2015
Elementary School (K-6) $27,690
Secondary School (7-12) $32,690

How does anyone begin to afford such an expensive education?

Plaid Skirts and Knee-Highs: I Survived Parochial School

Plaid SkirtFor nine years (from fourth grade through twelfth grade) I attended a private Episcopalian school which required me to attend chapel daily and wear uniforms. Our summer uniforms were dreadful and resembled potato sacks in their cut, with nauseating pastel colors which I could not stand, while our winter uniforms were the standard plaid skirt/white button down shirt/knee high socks/saddle shoes combination which defined most parochial schools back in the day. I respected the fact that the Campbell Plaid was proudly used in our uniforms, and I actually enjoyed seeing the bagpiper players in the same plaid on homecoming day, but those skirts were made of a very stiff and rough wool fabric which caused many of my classmates to squirm in discomfort.

When we made the passage from junior high to high school we were given different plaid skirts to wear which displayed a larger plaid pattern as well as a wrap style which was akin to the kilts Scottish men in the old country wore. Along with this fashionable wrap style was a large gold pin which we were expected to affix to the flap in order to keep ourselves covered in decent fashion. Our way of being rebellious was to replace this gold pin with buttons which had sayings on them which were at times rude enough to land us in detention. We were also given the option of wearing black and white Vans instead of saddle shoes, an option which I gladly chose. I could never stand having my little feet choked by the hard leather of saddle shoes which would often cut into the flesh at my ankle. Another odd feature of my high school days was the fact that the high school was all-girls. In retrospect I think this was a good thing since I never got the chance to be distracted in class by silly boys.

Some people have asked me if I would send a child to a private school which required uniforms, and I have replied the same way. If the education is top notch, I think the conformity of uniforms contributes to the discipline that is necessary for high academic achievement. After all, grade school and high school environments should stress education and not what latest fashion trends are sweeping today’s youth.

On another note, I am well aware of the common fantasy of people wanting to play dress-up as schoolgirls, but this mostly puzzles me. I mean, I do understand the fantasy to some extent, but Halloween costumes are so sexified that they are a far cry from what is found in private school settings. Honestly, a true school uniform is dreadful and not the slightest bit sexy. But to each his own I guess…
