Hormone Roller Coaster (repost)

anxious_woman

Oh, to be a woman. We are blessed with goddess energy and are also capable of being strong and muscular while holding onto our femininity. But with our female distinction we also have hormonal fluctuations which can wreak havoc on our health and our moods. It can be a tricky thing to keep estrogen and progesterone levels balanced consistently, especially for those of us who compete. Estrogen imbalance can also bring about early menopause, premenstrual symptoms, menstrual irregularities, and skin issues.

Women who practice a healthy diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep and stress management have the best chance of keeping their hormones in balance throughout their cycles. Overly processed foods, especially refined sugars, should be avoided. Strength training is also an excellent way of regulating estrogen levels in the body. However, I realize that the majority of you who are reading this are already on board with clean eating and weight training, but may still struggle with mood swings, food cravings, menstrual irregularities, and menstrual cramps.

Here are some tips on how to combat mood swings and food cravings which may emerge each month. These supplements will not affect contest prep, and may actually equip you with the best chance of staying on track even during THAT time of the month.

MOOD SWINGS: I am a big fan of the B vitamins because they are proven to reduce stress and anxiety. In fact, I make sure that all of my patients who suffer from depression and anxiety take a B-complex supplement to regulate their mood. It is also a good idea to take magnesium glycinate to restore the magnesium that is depleted during times of stress. Start with 250 milligrams daily, then increase to three times daily with meals. If you get drowsy or have frequent bowel movements, decrease your dose down to once or twice per day.

FOOD CRAVINGS: One of the reasons why women tend to crave chocolate around that special time of the month is because they are often deficient in magnesium, which is found in high amounts in chocolate. For this reason, I suggest taking magnesium glycinate(as stated before) to normalize magnesium levels in the body. Dosage parameters are the same, but if you prefer, you can take magnesium for two weeks at a time, starting a week before your period and ending a week after you get your period.

Another great supplement to take for food cravings is alpha lipoic acid. Take 100 milligrams three times daily. If you really get slugged with strong food cravings before flow visits, add chromium picolinate (200 micrograms three times daily) and vanadyl sulfate (10 milligrams three times daily) to your regimen.

Paying Attention

Guess-What-Butterflies-Made-From

If you’re like most people these days, you barely have a moment to catch your breath as you power through your day. You may be powering through meetings, working feverishly on projects, taking your kids to their activities, making dinner, etcetera, without pausing to wonder WHY you are doing all of those things. You just DO them, because you’re supposed to, right? You probably also tend to expect everything to run smoothly, which of course may topple over at any given time.

The thing is, if you never stop to wonder why those little glitches occur, you may be missing an important message. Sometimes things just line up in the oddest ways, and what you might think is a disaster is actually a wonderful opportunity to start fresh. Wonderful, magical, serendipitous things are always occurring, and if we pay attention a bit and slow our roll just a bit, we can begin to appreciate how amazing and frequent those moments are. Like a chain reaction, one small event can cause a cascade which opens many doors, changes your focus and direction so that you explore something you might never have thought to explore before, and enables you to grow as a person.

Pause for a moment, pay attention, and observe.

Building An Empire

gonna build an empire

I love the fact that the notion of building one’s empire has become a trendy thing recently. In keeping with the warrior mentality which has spread like a brush fire among ambitious, talented people, I am also hard at work building an empire of my own. I regard every single day as a new brick to add to the foundation of that empire, and I am bound and determined to reach all the goals I have placed in front of me.

The limiting factor in my empire building efforts is my skill set in marketing and branding. While social media platforms have made it easier than ever before to market products or services for free, I still get overwhelmed with all the elements which go into a successful marketing campaign. Branding is even more challenging for a hybrid like me who is much harder to define and who has a relatively diverse potential audience.

my passion

Nevertheless, all of the things I am passionate about, coupled with my fierce drive to leave a lasting and positive impression on the world, keep me focused and moving forward. There are times when I feel like I am trudging in mud, because I might not know the technical aspects of putting a banner ad together, or how to add a sound byte to one of my websites, but it’s all a learning process for me, and it definitely keeps me on my toes!

The Magic Of Meditation

meditation-cognitive-bias

Meditation is something I have engaged in regularly for over ten years, but my practice had dwindled in the past two years to a session every few months. This was partially due to the fact that the death of my meditation teacher had rattled me so deeply that I was unable to sit in a meditation without being distracted at some point by my own grief.

It took a major life event from early April to wake me up and make me realize that by neglecting my meditation practice, I had made my spirit weary and unbalanced, Since the cadence of my life had changed rather dramatically and suddenly, I decided that adopting regular habits like meditating would be good for me. I have been able to carve out time in my schedule to meditate daily over the last few weeks, and the effects have been profound and positive. On some days, I only have a few minutes to set up my zafu (meditation cushion), light incense and the candles on my meditation altar, and sit in the moment for mindfulness meditation, but I still make sure I meditate before crawling in bed each night. I am not joking when I say I think more clearly, feel more calm, and experience less anxiety after meditating daily over the last few weeks. I now look at my daily meditation sessions as important daily workouts for my mind and spirit. I swear that even my gym workouts are better as a result of meditation, because I am more focused and calm during gym time than I used to be. Things which used to irritate me sort of glide off me now.

Regular meditation has made a tremendous difference in my general demeanor and my outlook on life, and now I honestly look forward to my sessions. I strongly encourage everyone to meditate regularly, especially anyone who feels beaten down by life or who deals with constant stress. Meditation provides an excellent outlet for stress, and can lessen symptoms of depression, reduce blood pressure and boost immunity.

Before you say that there’s no time to meditate, I am willing to bet you that there are a few minutes each day you can spare to nurture your spirit. You can either take a few minutes first thing in the morning to sit and meditate, or do it right before you go to sleep. If you feel intimidated by the idea of sitting on a meditation cushion, you can simply sit on the floor comfortably, close your eyes, and focus on your breathing. Each time you inhale, allow your chest to expand, and pull your shoulders back. When you exhale, imagine pushing away all of the stress of the day, out of your body, and into the air. Keep breathing slowly and deeply with your eyes closed, and try to empty your mind of any random thoughts or feelings which may come up.

A 5-Minute Breathing Meditation To Cultivate Mindfulness

Reduce stress, anxiety, and negative emotions, cool yourself down when your temper flares, and sharpen your concentration skills.

By Greater Good Science Center | February 26, 2016

How do you cultivate mindfulness? One way is to meditate. A basic method is to focus your attention on your own breathing—a practice simply called “mindful breathing.” After setting aside time to practice mindful breathing, you’ll find it easier to focus attention on your breath in your daily life—an important skill to help you deal with stress, anxiety, and negative emotions, cool yourself down when your temper flares, and sharpen your ability to concentrate.

Time required:

15 minutes daily for at least a week (though evidence suggests that mindfulness increases the more you practice it).

How to do it

The most basic way to do mindful breathing is simply to focus your attention on your breath, the inhale and exhale. You can do this while standing, but ideally you’ll be sitting or even lying in a comfortable position. Your eyes may be open or closed, but you may find it easier to maintain your focus if you close your eyes. It can help to set aside a designated time for this exercise, but it can also help to practice it when you’re feeling particularly stressed or anxious. Experts believe a regular practice of mindful breathing can make it easier to do it in difficult situations.

Sometimes, especially when trying to calm yourself in a stressful moment, it might help to start by taking an exaggerated breath: a deep inhale through your nostrils (3 seconds), hold your breath (2 seconds), and a long exhale through your mouth (4 seconds). Otherwise, simply observe each breath without trying to adjust it; it may help to focus on the rise and fall of your chest or the sensation through your nostrils. As you do so, you may find that your mind wanders, distracted by thoughts or bodily sensations. That’s OK. Just notice that this is happening and gently bring your attention back to your breath.

Find a relaxed, comfortable position. You could be seated on a chair or on the floor on a cushion. Keep your back upright, but not too tight. Hands resting wherever they’re comfortable. Tongue on the roof of your mouth or wherever it’s comfortable.

Notice and relax your body. Try to notice the shape of your body, its weight. Let yourself relax and become curious about your body seated here—the sensations it experiences, the touch, the connection with the floor or the chair. Relax any areas of tightness or tension. Just breathe.

Tune into your breath. Feel the natural flow of breath—in, out. You don’t need to do anything to your breath. Not long, not short, just natural. Notice where you feel your breath in your body. It might be in your abdomen. It may be in your chest or throat or in your nostrils. See if you can feel the sensations of breath, one breath at a time. When one breath ends, the next breath begins.
Be kind to your wandering mind. Now as you do this, you might notice that your mind may start to wander. You may start thinking about other things. If this happens, it is not a problem. It’s very natural. Just notice that your mind has wandered. You can say “thinking” or “wandering” in your head softly. And then gently redirect your attention right back to the breathing.
Stay here for five to seven minutes. Notice your breath, in silence. From time to time, you’ll get lost in thought, then return to your breath.
Check in before you check out. After a few minutes, once again notice your body, your whole body, seated here. Let yourself relax even more deeply and then offer yourself some appreciation for doing this practice today.

One of the most beautiful things about meditation is that you can be fully in the moment, without holding onto the trappings of your day. Work obligations, chores, errands, and any other mundane distraction can wait. It’s a wonderful escape from the physical world and the ultimate way to attain balance and peace. Plus it’s free!

Marc Jacobs Daisy Eau So Fresh

MJ Daisy Eau So Fresh

I first got a whiff of this amazing fragrance last summer, and was immediately intrigued. It was flirty, spring-summery, delicate, floral and sweet, yet not overly floral and not cloyingly sweet. It was the perfect balance of feminine, fresh, and seductive.

Every time I sampled it on my wrist, I fell more in love with its light, fun, happy vibe. So I put it on my Christmas wishlist.

I was blessed with a large bottle at Christmas (thank you Ian Lauer!), and I have worn it every day since. It is my signature scent now. I swear that I cannot walk out the door (except when I am headed to the gym) without spritzing Daisy Eau So Fresh on my skin. It doesn’t last too long, but I love the way it fades on me. It’s absolutely perfect and draws me in every time I wear it. It’s like instant happiness in a bottle!

Here is the official description of Marc Jacobs Daisy Eau So Fresh:

Exhilarating. Bubbly. Playful. Marc Jacobs Daisy Eau So Fresh Eau de Toilette is a reinterpretation of Daisy: More fruity, more bubbly, more fun! A floral fruity fragrance, it transports you to a place that is exhilarating, happy, and funny.

Being Spontaneous Is Good For The Soul

10353289_10202786714921210_2569317334354210816_o

Most people who know me well would describe me as pretty organized and on top of things. I am also so busy all the time that I honestly have to put everything in my calendar so that I know what is happening. As a result of having so much on my plate, I am rarely able to make last minute plans. I often give people the impression that I am all work and no play, and that I am always serious.

But I am a spunky one and thrive on variety. Though I like consistency and stability, I am always keen on new adventures, and much like a horse in a corral, I go a bit stir crazy when I am cooped up in a place or a situation for too long. As a result, the spontaneous part of me sometimes takes over, and I will do something out of character. I honestly wish I had more of a chance to do something on a moment’s notice, but I am a grownup, with a career and some pretty big goals which require my focus and attention.

Every once in a while, I have to contend with last minute schedule changes which usually make me feel anxious. It is pretty challenging for me to have to completely rearrange my schedule when one event shifts, because a domino effect occurs. However, I have been more adaptable in recent weeks, and have even found myself changing things up without having a compulsion to resist the changes. Instead of rushing home after work to do even more work, I have recently allowed myself to visit friends, lounge on the sofa with a cat or two, or take myself out to dinner after a particularly long day.

I also love finding a gap in my schedule and throwing a weekend getaway into the mix, because it enables me to recharge my batteries, escape the rhythm of my regular schedule, and have a little fun. There is also a part of me which yearns for international travel, so much so that I am willing to move everything around to accommodate a visit to another country. My attitude is that life is short, and that you only live once. I have no intention of waiting until the “perfect” time to travel or take a vacation, especially since I was stuck in that mindset for far too long during my 20’s and 30’s. If I can visit a different country ever year or so, I will be a happy camper.

Who knows, you might see me visiting a new country very soon!

The Fire Monkey Is Coming, And I Am Ready For Him!

Year-Of-The-Monkey-2016

Monday, February 8th marks the year of the Fire Monkey. Depending on your Chinese astrological sign, the year of the Fire Monkey may be great, so-so, or negative. According to George Tang’s Chinese Astrology site, 2016 looks like it will be a relatively good year for this Fire Horse…

2016 is the Year of Red Monkey. You were born in the Year of Horse. The following is the Red Monkey year prediction for people born in year of Horse.

Horse individuals can be extremely confident in 2016, my Chinese Horse horoscope 2016 astrology foretells, since everything they want is achievable in this Fire Monkey year. There should be many opportunities for success and hard work will not be wasted. There might be great obstacles to face, but they will be feeling very strong, both physically and mentally. They will be at their most charming and there is a strong sense that things will go their way.

As well as the chance to develop and expand in their careers and finances, such folk should also think about adding to their families. These characters will make remarkable strides in life this year since they may well be very clear about their objectives. 2016 will see excellent progress in new business ventures undertaken. They will be optimistic and they will shine. Everyone around them will benefit from their positivity. Friends will be drawn to these people in 2016 simply because of the “feel good factor” they cast around them.

For those Horse men and women in relationships, it looks like a year to share and enjoy times together, although the Horse characters must learn more respect the opinions of their spouses.

My Chinese horoscope suggests to me that both genders of this sign who are single will find love in 2016 providing they look for love in new places. Such individuals are naturals when it comes to romance and they will attract a fair amount of interest in the Fire Monkey cycle.

If Ma (Horse) folk are in relationships that are not working, then Chinese horoscope year 2016 is an excellent year to move on. The personal magnetism should be at its strongest in the spring months. By the summer months, Horse men and women will have found new romantic interests. Love will be very romantic and passionate for these people in 2016.

Being adored by others will help to build up the emotional strength of these folks and by October, they will be at their strongest and best. This is an excellent time to think about having a new baby for the birth of a child will serve to further strengthen personal relationships.

2016 is a wonderful horoscope year for the career of Horse characters, they are lucky. Anything they embark on this year has the potential for big success. Businessmen should try to maintain cordial relationships with their associates and partners. By May, they should not hesitate to take up new and exciting projects. The Monkey lunar period will enable them to enter into fresh partnerships and successfully expand their business activities.

As the year progresses professionals will have more clarity on their objectives and will take the right steps to meet their targets.

There could be lots of social interaction with people who will admire the thinking of the Horse. Although there could be some minor resistance to these folks ought to be able to win over people with their intellectual arguments. Thy will find that major co-operation will take place and the workplace will be extremely harmonious. There could be delays caused by technical problems, but Horse folk should remain steadfast since things will work out in their favour. This sign’s men and women are not inclined to make rash decisions anyway and by taking the time to reach solutions the way ahead for them will be on solid ground.

If Horse men and women have any debts, then 2016 zodiac period should be a good year to settle them. It is an excellent time for finding new ways to earn money. It will also be a time when people should be able to save. They could be surprised at how quickly they are able to accumulate cash. There could be some longer-term investments that will be of interest to them and ones that will bring in exceptionally good returns.

Chinese 2016 Horse Horoscope Closing Views

My Chinese astrology predictions foretell that Ma folk could be interested in investing in property development, either by making it more beautiful or by extending or changing the existing space.

The homes of people will increase in value substantially after home improvements are made and if they do decide to move house, they will make excellent choices in terms of location and good value for money.

The emotional health of the Horse individual will improve as their self-confidence increases this zodiac year. Physically there could be minor problems in the muscular system. Energy levels will increase considerably after June. These individuals will have plenty of stamina and will feel able to achieve just about anything they want as The Monkey cycle passes.

The zodiac Ma person should avoid over-indulgence in rich foods. If your hyperactivity can be controlled you will stay strong and find good solutions to most problems. Such individuals are naturally psychic and will find their psychic strength peaks in the late autumn months of 2016.
