Eraclea Skincare

Eraclea skincare

I have tried a plethora of skincare products over the last decade, and have very definite opinions about what is good and what is worthless in the world of topical products. So it is a big deal when I say that I absolutely ADORE Eraclea Skincare Products. These products are exceptional!

I have been using my regular facial cleanser, but afterwards, I apply the Intensive Repair and Protect Serum/Vitamin C, then the Pure Hydration Serum/Zinc and the Hydrating Day Lotion for Normal to Oily Skin. I have been doing this for close to 2 weeks and have noticed that my skin is more radiant than it has been in years. I am not kidding about this! I am excited to try the products in their Repair and Correct line as well.

Eraclea Products feature a patented system called HylaSpongs which maximizes the hydrating effects of hyaluronic acid, and also manage to pack in peptides, antioxidants, and botanical extracts in their formulations.

Another HUGE plus is that Eraclea cleansers and hydration products are reasonably priced at between $35 to $85 per product. You can purchase Eraclea products at medical spas, doctor’s offices or online at http://www.eracleaskincare.com.

Does Laser Hair Removal Really Work?

laser-hair-removal-side-effectsBack in 2003 when I was just beginning my educational foray into aesthetic medicine, I was encouraged to perform laser hair removal on myself. That way, I could witness the process firsthand and thus provide valuable information to my patients about the experience. I would inform the staff whenever I was ready to perform these treatments, then would sequester myself in the laser treatment room and conduct these treatments without any pre-procedure anesthesia.

I used an Nd:Yag laser back then which is generally less effective than a diode laser in treating hair follicles, but I only had access to that type of laser at that time. I treated my underarms, legs and tried to do my bikini line (more on that later). Did the procedure hurt? YES. It felt like red hot rubber band stings all over the areas treated, and some spots literally took my breath away. But I was so determined to get rid of the hair that I toughed it out.

The area in which I got the best results, and which generally yields the best results for patients in general, was the underarm region. To this day I have about 6 hair follicles on each underarm which produce hair, and the hair is so fine, wispy, pale in color and slow growing that I resort to plucking them out every 6 to 8 weeks. Talk about low maintenance! I also no longer have the shadow which hair growth in the underarms produces.

My legs were less responsive, mainly due to the fact that my skin was tan during the entire series. Ideal laser hair removal patients have dark hair and light skin, but this was certainly not the case with me. Even so, I had about an 80% reduction in the amount of active hair follicles.

Then there was my bikini line. It is difficult to perform an intensely painful treatment on oneself without wanting to discontinue such treatment, and this was certainly the case with me when I attempted to treat this area! As a result of my inability to tolerate self-treatment in the bikini line, I am now undergoing a new series of laser hair removal treatments in the bikini area, this time with a diode laser and someone else performing the procedures. I have had two treatments thus far and am already enjoying about a 30% reduction of active hair follicles.

For those of you who are considering laser hair removal, you can expect to undergo 4 to 8 treatments, spaced anywhere from 4 to 8 weeks apart depending on the laser used and the area treated. Each treatment tends to cause about a 15-20% reduction in the amount of hair, and the hair that regrows will grow more slowly over time. The endpoint usually yields about a 95% reduction in hair regrowth.

I think laser hair removal is a great option for just about everyone!

Botox Versus Xeomin

BOTOX® was FDA-approved for the treatment of facial wrinkles in 2002, and since that time has become a youth elixir for many people, smoothing wrinkled foreheads and eye areas. However, in recent years, new Botulinum neurotoxin forms have become available to consumers which promise better results. As someone who has had extensive experience as an injector, I am not easily sold on the idea that a competitor’s product is always better. The most recent competitor to Botox is Xeomin which uses the same active ingredient as Botox and promises of results which last as long as six months. It is the preferred form of neurotoxin for use in patients who have developed antibodies to the more complex Botox and Dysport molecules.
xeomin-232

The simplicity of Xeomin increases its appeal. Unlike Botox and Dysport, Xeomin contains only one ingredient: botulinum toxin A, and thus is referred to as a “naked injectable,” meaning that it does not contain any additives. The major benefit of Xeomin is that the human body is less likely to become resistant to it. Xeomin is dosed in the same manner as Botox, using the same unit measure, and costs about the same as Botox. Common side effects, such as minor swelling, headache and bruising, are the same as with Botox. Yet Xeomin can potentially last up to six months, which is wonderful news for patients who typically get a three month result from Botox or Dysport.

I would recommend Xeomin for any patient who has noticed a decreased response of duration of effect from Botox treatments, as it may provide a solution to those issues. Be sure to follow the same pre and post treatment guidelines that you are instructed to follow when receiving Botox or Dysport treatments. Also be aware that Xeomin’s onset of action may take longer to assert itself, so if you are accustomed to seeing results from Dysport in a day or Botox results in a few days, it may take up to a week or more to see Xeomin’s results.

How White Rice Ruins Me

I grew up on glutinous white rice as a result of my Japanese heritage and never thought twice about it. Then when I began competing in 2009, I had to cut out the white food and actually went through a bit of separation anxiety. In a sense I was probably feeling more guilt than anything else, but I eliminated it from my daily meal plan and suddenly noticed that my physique leaned out rapidly. It’s not like I had started out with a weight problem, but I certainly did not have the chiseled appearance of someone who stepped on a bodybuilding stage regularly.
Oh no cellulite
Though it has been relatively easy to avoid regular bread, sweets, and other contest prep busters, I still find myself pining for sticky white rice, because it is the bosom buddy of the lovely raw fish slices that characterize sushi. I absolutely love sushi and sashimi but only indulge in it on rare occasions when I can afford it and when I know I can have a fun meal. What drives me nuts is the fact that all-you-can-eat sushi places require you to eat all the rice you are served, which means that you are almost force fed a large quantity of high glycemic index starch. It’s wild to think that people frequently negate the health damaging effects of the rice, only concentrating on the fish being served. Truth is, the insulin-spiking effects of white rice can wreak havoc on general health and can certainly set one back on contest prep. So if you consume sushi frequently, you may be setting up your body for insulin resistance over time.

Another thing I have noticed personally whenever I eat sticky white rice is that my hamstring region holds water. The following morning is always disappointing because I wake up to waves and ripples, and sadly, they aren’t the kind you would see in the ocean. It takes 24 to 48 hours to get rid of that too, and also requires me to hydrate aggressively to flush everything out. It’s dramatic and it’s very upsetting. My body has actually gotten more sensitive over time too, and my body struggles to digest white rice. To be honest, I am not sure it’s really worth indulging in the white rice I used to love to much because it sets me back so much health-wise.

Bargain Facials In My City

After being spoiled off and on for many years with regular free facials and microdermabrasion, I once again found myself in an “off” phase during the summer last year. I continued to practice my weekly at-home facial ritual, but my skin became more lackluster, deflated and congested. By October I caved and, in complete desperation, decided to check out the local beauty school. To be honest, I was extremely concerned that I would have an allergic reaction to a product or breakouts as a result of a student’s lack of experience or knowledge.

The first student who worked on me talked to me throughout the entire facial and took about two hours to complete the visit. This Skin facial aestheticianoccurred twice. However, she was very nice and I enjoyed chatting with her despite having zero chance to relax during the process. I also ended up with beautiful, glowing skin with no breakouts and no dry skin patches. SCORE! This nice young lady graduated, leaving me in the hands of a new student who is rather lacking in conversational skills. Case in point, I went in for a facial a few days ago and I had to ask her how she was doing because she made no effort to greet me or make small talk. It was a bit strange, but I didn’t mind so much because she was quiet during the treatment, and I was able to relax during the entire visit. She was skillful in her facial techniques, gave a relaxing arm massage (I just wish she used more pressure, because I could barely feel it), and finished the entire treatment in 45 minutes. When I got up from the table, my skin was absolutely glowing. When I went to pay, I got a discount on an already very reasonably priced facial, walking to my car with only $25 less in my wallet. And that was including a 25 percent tip!

I have now had four facials at the local beauty school in my city and must say that I am rather impressed! I have had countless facials throughout my adult life and know a good facial when I see one. So this has been a pleasant surprise. If you have a beauty school in your area, you might want to give it a try with facials, nail services, and hair services. Hopefully you will be as pleasantly surprised as I was!

Why Regular Facials Are Good

One of my favorite things in the world is a great facial because I get to lie down for at least 45 minutes without interruptions and my skin gets some tender loving care. I have spent over a decade as a physician in aesthetic medicine and have noticed a HUGE difference in my skin and in my patients’ skin when a regular facial regimen is abandoned. Make sure you visit a reputable spa with knowledgeable aestheticians to ensure that the proper skin care products are used for your particular skin type.

The exfoliation and deep cleaning which occur during a spa facial will remove dead skin cells and pollutants and increase circulation, while the serums and moisturizers used towards the end of the facial often diminish fine lines and wrinkles while also restoring normal pH balance to the skin. If you absolutely can’t afford to get a professional facial, you can give yourself one at home.

facialHere are the steps to a great do-it-yourself facial:

Step 1: Cleansing

Thoroughly wash your face and neck with a facial cleanser. Some of my favorites are Bliss’Fabulous Foaming Face Wash and Olay Foaming Face Wash. Remove eye makeup. If you have very sensitive eyes, I recommend using Kiehl’s Supremely Gentle Eye Makeup Remover.

Step 2: Exfoliation

Use a gentle scrub on your face, moving in a circular motion.

Step 3: Mask

Apply a mask to the face and neck, avoiding the eye area. Generally, most masks should be left on for 10 to 15 minutes, then rinsed thoroughly. If you have oilier skin, opt for a clay mask. Dry skin types respond best to cream masks since they are formulated to be much more emollient.

Step 4: Moisturize

Apply a moisturizer onto your face and neck.

When It’s Snowing…On Your Scalp

snow-snow-dandruff-shampoo-demotivational-posterUsually when we think of the winter season, we think of brisk weather and beautiful white snow. However, winter can bring a different kind of white flake, namely, dandruff. When the mercury drops, skin can become extremely itchy and dry, causing a torrent of white dust to scatter on your hair and shoulders. The combination of cold air and the dry heat which is encountered indoors can be especially problematic for people who already suffer from dry skin. Other conditions can predispose one to developing dandruff, including eczema, yeast overgrowth, seborrheic dermatitis, fungal overgrowth, skin allergies, or malnutrition.

Dandruff adThe most immediate and effective treatments for dandruff consist of hair products which are available both with or without a prescription. If your issue is one of yeast overgrowth, zinc pyrithione will effectively slow down such growth, while coal tar and ketoconazole are effective for fungal causes. Oily scalps will benefit from tea tree oil, selenium sulfide, or salicylic acid preparations. If your scalp is dry, you should make sure to condition your SCALP and not just your hair after you wash it. I also recommend sulfate free shampoos in general because they aren’t nearly as harsh or drying as the sulfate varieties are.

Regardless of which type of scalp treatment you use, make sure to leave the solution on your scalp for several minutes to give it enough time to exert its effect.
